A Rewind alternative for Mac
In short: Rewind’s Mac app stopped capturing your screen and audio on 19 December 2025, after Meta acquired its maker, Limitless (9to5Mac). Memup is a different kind of memory: instead of recording your screen, it reads the files you choose (documents, photos, screenshots, recordings and videos) and lets you find anything in them by describing it. It runs offline, the library is encrypted, and nothing is uploaded.
What happened to Rewind?
Limitless, the company formerly called Rewind, announced in December 2025 that it had joined Meta and that the Rewind Mac app would be discontinued. Screen and audio capture in the app was switched off on 19 December 2025, and users were asked to export their data before then.
How Memup is different
Rewind recorded everything on screen, all the time. Memup only knows what you give it: add a folder, a few files, a screen capture or a voice note, and it makes all of it searchable. That means no always-on recording and no screen history you didn’t ask for.
| Memup | Rewind (before December 2025) | |
|---|---|---|
| What it remembers | Files you add: documents, photos, screenshots, recordings, videos | Everything shown on screen, plus audio |
| Recording | None in the background; you capture the screen when you choose | Continuous screen and audio recording |
| Where it runs | On your Mac, offline, encrypted | On your Mac, with some cloud features |
| Find by describing | Yes, by meaning, across languages | Yes, by text seen on screen |
| Inside videos | Opens a video at the moment you describe | Timeline of past screen recordings |
| Answers | Answers from your files, with numbered sources | Questions about past screen activity |
| Price | Free for 100 files; $99 once for unlimited | Subscription |
| Available today | Yes | No |
Who Memup suits
- You used Rewind to find a screenshot, slide or document again, and you’d like that without recording everything.
- You keep notes, meeting recordings and videos and want to jump to the exact line or moment.
- You want your memory to stay on your own Mac, with no account and no subscription.
Who it doesn’t suit
If you need a complete, automatic timeline of everything you did on your Mac, Memup isn’t that. It finds things in the files you keep, not in a recording of your day.
Moving from Rewind
If you exported your Rewind data, add the exported files and any screenshots or recordings you kept to Memup. It reads the text in images and the speech in recordings, so they become searchable straight away.
Try it
Memup is free for up to 100 files, with every feature except watched folders. A licence is $99 once for one person, plus $49 for each extra person. It needs a Mac with Apple silicon and macOS 14 or later.
